Diamond bodies in stonework: Types, uses and common mistakes.

Among the smallest grinding and cutting tools for processing stone and minerals, diamond bodies clearly belong. They are shank tools with a solid, surface or ceramic diamond segment. Their size is a benefit that makes these tools irreplaceable helpers in your projects.

The most preferred diamond bodies are with 3 mm and 6 mm shank. When working with stone, tools with a thicker 6 mm shank are mostly used. Their advantage is a stronger body and more working material. Smaller, 3 mm tools are used more only for detailed sculptural processing.

In the next few lines, we will look at a few tips on how to effectively use the tool's desktop.

What is the basic distribution of diamond bodies per stone?

Division according to stem diameter:

  • 3 mm - mainly used for fine modeling or detailed sculpting work
  • 6 mm - a stronger shank allows the tool to be used in more powerful hand machines, for example for a stonemason

Division by type of segment

  • EP - galvanically applied synthetic diamond - finer grits (#60, 120, 220). Suitable for fine processing of glass, ceramics, marble and granite (in granite, a shorter service life of the tool should be taken into account)
  • VB - vacuum applied synthetic diamond - coarser grits (# 30, 40). Suitable for processing material similar to EP.It is characterized by faster work, better durability when processing granite than EP.Suitable for glass, granite, marble, ceramics...
  • FULL diamond segment - diamond binder (mixture of synthetic diamond and metal binder) - Tool suitable for fast and rough removal in natural stones. A full segment means that the working surface is up to the tool axis. The working surface is not just surface-applied, as with EP or VB.
  • RESIN - a mixture of synthetic diamond and ceramic binder. In our offer you will find several tips of polishing shank tools for polishing stone. By using the whole set (all grains) you will achieve a high gloss.

Use of diamond shank tools.

In stonework, diamond bodies are used for various purposes. It can be detailed machining of corners, corners and details in the construction industry or in stone carving work in the shaping of statues and monuments.

How to choose a legal instrument for your project?

  • Choose the right type - Improper work leads to deformation of the work surface and rapid wear.
  • Choose the right parameters - Before use, find out what the appropriate revolutions are, or whether water cooling is necessary.
  • Define the material correctly - When working with a diamond core, it is important to know the material you are working with. Different types of stone require different approaches and work techniques.

What to pay attention to when working with a diamond body?

It is important to realize which side of the tool is working and work with it along its entire length. In another case, there is rapid wear or irreversible deformation, similar to the photo.

Detail of incorrect use of the tool and its consequences

In the photo below, the entire working surface of the tool is shown in red, which "needs to be taken care of" and continuously loaded during work. You get that sharp edges or tips do not lose their shape and keep it as long as possible.

PHOTO: The working surface of the tool with a full diamond segment is shown in red. It is important to work with this entire surface in order to avoid deformation of the tool with loss of its original shape. The same style of work is also recommended for the VB and EP models, but incorrect work does not result in deformations, but in the loss of the work surface.
